Soccer Training Session Plan for 14 Players
A complete session for 14 players with rondos, positional play, possession overloads and two parallel small-sided games.
Quick answer: A 90-minute session for 14 players works best with two simultaneous rondo warm-up groups, a large positional play exercise, a possession game with numerical superiority, and two parallel small-sided games to close. With 14 players you're close to a full squad - the session below keeps every player active across all four phases without improvised adaptations.
Training With 14 Players: The Sweet Spot Before Full 11-a-Side
Fourteen players sits right between small-group training and full squad work. Too many for tight rondos, too few for a proper 11v11 - but perfect for positional games with genuine overloads, realistic team shapes, and high-intensity small-sided games across two simultaneous pitches.
The session below uses four drills built for 14 players. Every player is active from the first whistle.

Total: ~70 minutes (extend main blocks to reach 90 if needed)
Session theme: Maintaining possession under numerical imbalance - when you're in the majority and when you're not.
Phase 1 - Warm-Up: 4v2 Rondo x2 Groups (15 min)
This drill is in the CoachPage drill library.

Players: 12 active across two simultaneous groups + 2 rotating in every 2 minutes
Setup: Two identical grids, 8x8 meters each. Each grid: 4 outside players, 2 defenders inside. The 2 extra players rotate into one of the grids every 2 minutes, replacing 2 outside players.
How it works:
- Outside players keep possession with a maximum of 2 touches
- 2 defenders press inside to win the ball
- A pass that splits both defenders earns a point
- When a defender wins the ball, they swap with the player who lost it
- Outside perimeter players: 1 touch only
Progression (minute 10): Drop to 1 touch across both groups. Challenge: which group completes more split passes in the last 5 minutes?
Coaching focus: Open body shape before receiving, early scanning, communication.
Variation - 4+1v2: Add a neutral player inside each grid to create a 4+1v2. The central joker always plays with the team in possession, 1 touch only. This creates an extra passing option in tight spaces and better simulates central midfield combinations. Coming soon to the CoachPage drill library.
Phase 2 - Main Block 1: 5v6+3 Positional Play (12 min)
This drill is in the CoachPage drill library.

Players: 14 (exact)
Setup: Defined space with 1 outside joker on the perimeter and 2 inner jokers providing support. 5 players maintain possession against 6 defenders.
How it works:
- Attacking team (5): Maintain possession in the defined space. 1 outside joker on the perimeter + 2 inner jokers provide support options - use them freely to keep the ball. Objective: circulate the ball and find openings in the defensive block
- Defending team (6): Press to recover the ball. When they win possession, roles switch immediately - the team that lost the ball becomes the new defending team
- Scoring: A sequence of N consecutive passes earns a point; using all 3 jokers in the same sequence counts as a bonus point
Why it works for 14: This is one of the most demanding possession drills you can run in a 14-player soccer training session. The attacking team is outnumbered 5v6, so the 3 jokers are essential - not optional. Players must constantly read where the jokers are and use them intelligently to sustain possession against a numerical majority.
Coaching focus: Recognising when to use the inside vs. outside joker, circulation speed, defensive pressing shape as a block of 6.
Phase 3 - Main Block 2: 6v6+2 Jokers Possession Game (15 min)
Players: 14 (exact)
Setup: 35x25m grid. Two teams of 6 compete inside. 2 neutral jokers positioned freely anywhere in the grid - they always play with the team in possession.
How it works:
- Attacking team (6 + 2 jokers): Maintain possession with a permanent 8v6 overload. Inside players: 2 touches max. Jokers: 1 touch only, freely available anywhere in the space
- Defending team (6): Press to win the ball. When they recover possession, they immediately become the attacking team - the 2 jokers switch to support them
- Score a point for every 6 consecutive passes. Bonus point if both jokers are used in the same sequence
Why it follows Phase 2: Phase 2 trained possession against a numerical disadvantage (5v6). This phase flips it - now the possession team has the overload. Players experience both sides of the numbers game in the same session, which builds a more complete understanding of when to risk the pass and when to keep it safe.
Coaching focus: Using the jokers to relieve pressure rather than as a last resort, pressing compactly as a unit of 6, quick transition to attack after winning the ball.
Phase 4 - Small-Sided Game: Two Parallel Games (20 min)
Players: 14 across two simultaneous pitches
Split the group into two games running side by side:
Pitch A - 4v4 Multi-Goal Small-Sided Game (8 players)
This drill is in the CoachPage drill library.

- Two teams of 4 compete on a pitch with 3 mini-goals on each end line
- Teams score on any of the 3 opponent goals - forces constant scanning and switching play
- Roles switch instantly on every turnover
Pitch B - 3v3 Four-Goal Combination Game (6 players)
This drill is in the CoachPage drill library.

- 3v3 with 4 goals (2 on each side). An outside wall-pass player between each team's goals, 1 touch only
- Teams attack their 2 goals and defend the opponent's 2
- Instant role switch on every turnover
Rotation: Every 4 minutes, rotate 2 players from Pitch A to Pitch B and vice versa. Everyone experiences both formats.
Why it closes this 14-player soccer training session well: After two positional play phases focused on possession and structure, both games push intensity - multi-goal scanning in the 4v4, combination finishing in the 3v3. Every player finishes the session having competed in a real game under pressure.
Adapting This Session for Different Scenarios
If you end up with 12 players: Drop to one group in Phase 3 (4v4+4 from the library). Run Phase 4 as a single 6v6. Full plan: Soccer Training Session Plan for 12 Players.
If you have 16 players: Add 2 extra jokers to Phase 2 (5v6+5) and extend Phase 3 groups to 8 players each (4v4+4 with an extra rotation player per group).
U12-U14: Remove touch restrictions, use the simpler scoring rule (X passes = 1 point), enlarge grids by 20%.
U15-U18: Enforce strict touch limits in all phases. In Phase 2, reduce the pass-count threshold to increase pressure. In Phase 4, add a provocation rule - goal scored within 6 seconds of winning the ball counts double.
Adults / senior amateur: Shrink grids in Phases 2 and 3, drop to 2-touch max throughout, raise the competitive intensity in Phase 4.

FAQ
Can I run this session with an odd number like 13 or 15 players?
Yes. For 13: add a 5th joker in Phase 3 on one of the grids (that group becomes 4v4+4). For 15: add 1 player to Pitch A in Phase 4 (4v4+1 neutral) or rotate them across both pitches.
What's the right grid size for Phase 2 with 14 players?
Start at 30x25m and adjust based on how easily the possession team keeps the ball. If it's too easy, shrink it. If the defenders can't press effectively, expand it slightly.
How do I manage two groups at the same time in Phase 3?
Give each group a simple, clear objective before you split them - "team in possession must use all 3 jokers for a bonus point" - then circulate between groups every 3-4 minutes. You don't need to watch both simultaneously.
Which players should go on which pitch in Phase 4?
Mix technical ability across both pitches. Avoid putting all your strongest players on Pitch A - the 3v3 format on Pitch B is often more demanding individually.
How do I plan my sessions more efficiently?
Most coaches spend 20+ minutes building what should take 5. CoachPage has a session builder, the full drill library, and PDF export - choose age and focus, tweak the session, and the plan is ready before you leave the house.
